For storage purposes, loft boarding doesn’t require you to have planning permission and is totally within your permitted development rights. However, if you’re turning a loft storage space into an actual living space afterwards, then this will require permission and compliance with a different set of regulations to ensure safety and protect your relevant warranties.

The floor joists in a loft can carry roughly 40 kg per square metre, so ensuring you keep your stored items under this will maintain the strength of your joists. It’s crucial to not overload your loft boarding to avoid the chance of any cracks in the ceiling below while protecting the joists from cracking – so try to spread out the weight in your loft as best you can.

But as loft experts, we steer clear of nailing loft boards directly onto joists, as this will just compromise the amount of airflow that passes through the layers of flooring and will eventually cause too much damage to the property.
