Types of Loft Boarding

We can install four types of flooring support systems to raise the loft boarding above the insulation (50mm – 350mm), maintainaing airflow and avoiding the risk of condensation from forming.

Loft Leg
(Raising by 175mm)

Developed by a team of engineers and designers, the Loft Leg 175mm system is very strong, lightweight and when applied correctly, reduces stress on floor & ceiling joists. As a result, a much greater load can be stored safely.

Loft Leg XL
(Raising by 300mm)

Just like the shorter Loft Leg system, but in XL. This 300mm stilt allows your insulation to remain at the Government recommended thickness, ensuring your homes thermal insulation level is maintained or in most cases improved.

Loft Leg & Timber Cross Brace
(Raising by 275mm or 350mm)

Timber cross brace can also be combined with LoftLeg to provide a support system we developed in house. We use this method in areas where we have a combination of factors to overcome, this could be different flooring levels or even new extensions leading into existing older loft spaces. There are many different ways to apply this method, but we always ensure the one we advise you with is the very best approach.

The LoftZone flooring system creates a very strong platform using lightweight raised beams. The beams slide along and sit on top of Triangle supports which can be used to overcome any irregular spacing between floor joists.

For storage purposes, loft boarding doesn’t require you to have planning permission and is totally within your permitted development rights. However, if you’re turning a loft storage space into an actual living space afterwards, then this will require permission and compliance with a different set of regulations to ensure safety and protect your relevant warranties.
The floor joists in a loft can carry roughly 40 kg per square metre, so ensuring you keep your stored items under this will maintain the strength of your joists. It’s crucial to not overload your loft boarding to avoid the chance of any cracks in the ceiling below while protecting the joists from cracking – so try to spread out the weight in your loft as best you can.
It’s very important to us that our team have the required insurance, training and qualifications for the type of work they carry out. Such as Asbestos identification, working at height and managing risk through detailed assessments. This ensures we provide outstanding service and deliver your project safely.
If we wanted to ruin your loft insulation, we’d use standard loft boarding. But as loft experts, we steer clear of nailing loft boards directly onto joists, as this will just compromise the amount of airflow that passes through the layers of flooring and will eventually cause too much damage to the property.
